PARENTS AND CARING FOR THE ELDERLY

My child, listen when your father corrects you.
Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
9 What you learn from them will crown you with grace
and be a chain of honor around your neck.
Proverbs 1:8-9

Caring for the elderly may often be a challenge, but it brings the blessing of God. The Lord has a very high regard for parents. One of the reasons He placed them in charge of children was to instill discipline and respect for authority. Without respect for authority, they will grow up without respect for the Lord… to their eternal hurt.

The Bible is very specific about treating our parents right. “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth” Ephesians 6:1-3.

Even if they do not serve the Lord, and perhaps have not been the best of parents worthy of trust, we still owe them a debt of respect.

A big issue today, especially with children who have moved to another country, is the upkeep of their parents. Pensioners do not have an easy life normally and children are responsible to see they are adequately cared for and supported.

Here’s what the Bible says about that:

Caring for the Elderly

Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her.
But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home
and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God.
1 Timothy 5:3-4

How God views those who do not support their Parents and Families

But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household,
have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers.

1 Timothy 5:8

Should the Church be responsible for caring for the Elderly?

If a woman who is a believer has relatives who are widows,
she must take care of them and not put the responsibility on the church.
Then the church can care for the widows who are truly alone.
