13God’s Name Represents Who He Is. Be Careful How You Use It.

The Meaning Of His Name
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.” – Mat 6:9,10
Proverbs 22:1 says “a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches” because your name represents who you are perceived to be.
And so it is with God. His Name represents His very essence and being. It embraces all that He is and all that He does.
When God chose to reveal different aspects of His character, He taught us His different names. For example, He is Jehovah-Jireh, our Provider; Jehovah-Rapha, our Healer; Jehovah-Nissi, our Banner of Protection; Jehovah-Shalom, our Peace; Jehovah-Ra-ah, our Shepherd; Jehovah-Tsidkenu, our Holiness or Righteousness; Jehovah-Shammah, our God who is present with us.
How sad it is when people – and sometimes Christians – use the Name of God lightly. Some even use the Only Name by which we may be saved as a “swear word”. God considers this so serious that He included it in the Ten Commandments.
We are not to use His Name (or any aspect of His Name) for purposes other than sanctioned by the scriptures. That includes claiming His Name, and then living in a way that brings dishonor to it.

Hi Val
Thanks for this. We all need to hear it more often. I have a question. I have started to study Hebrews online (www.hebrew4christians.net) so I can understand the Bible better. I have also made an extensive study into God’s Name as I come into contact with a lot of JW’s and do not agree with their claim to God’s Name or the way they believe. There is a lot of controversy about the Name of God and I always get an uneasy feeling when I hear the name Jehovah. Not that that means anything. The problem is that nobody knows how the Tetragramaton is pronounced. And the Jews say they think it is probably closer to Yahweh. It is all very confusing. But I want to know. If God wanted us to call Him by the Tetragramaton, why did he allow it to be removed from the Bible. And is it now correct if we added it back? And which one should we add back? If someone asks me, “what is your God’s name?” I will answer him ” my God’s Name is I am, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” I believe God is bigger than just a name. Your view on this will be greatly appreciated.
